Devil (2010)

Thirty-one days of Horror.

For the whole month of October I’ll be watching and reviewing one horror film each day!

Devil is a fantastic little low budget horror mystery, from writers M Night Shymalan and Brian Nelson and director John Erick Dowdle.

Following an unexpected suicide, five strangers get trapped together in an elevator in a skyscraper in Philadelphia. One of whom, may be the devil. Things start getting strange as our cast start getting attacked one by one as the security staff and the police try to figure out what’s going on, how to save them and who might be the Devil. A mechanic, a security guard, a young woman, an old woman and a salesman.

The first (and only) part of The Night Chronicles, an incomplete Anthology horror series, Devil is a tight, fast paced atmospheric chiller. I do think it’s a shame they never finished The Night Chronicles, as Devil was a great start to a potential franchise. They did rework the potential third film into Split, the Unbreakable universe movie, so it’s not a total loss.

The cast includes Spider-Man villains Logan Marshall-Green and Bokeem Woodbine as well as an appearance by Hannibal’s Caroline Dhavernas.

I really enjoyed revisiting Devil, I’d forgotten just how fun it is. Supernatural and claustrophobic, a genuinely tense, scary movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Definitely worth a look!
